PAHs

What does PAHs mean ?

(polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons)

The main objective of the PAHs test according Directive 76/769/EC is the restriction of potential cancer.

PAHs are added in to rubber and plastic (such as soft PVC and ABS) as plasticizers to soften the materials.

A high amount of PAHs is also found if mineral oils used in plastic manufacturing processes.

If the used equipment is not maintained and clean enough, the produced rubber and plastic parts may contain PAHs.

How can I assure PAHs compliance?

Pema conduct a PAHs verification of the used materials in your product.
The limitation for PAHs is related to the contact time with the product.

Short time contact (usually defined as touching for less than 30 seconds) allows a maximum of:
Summary of PAHs 200 mg/kg
B¦ÁP 20 mg/kg
Long time contact (usually defined as touching for more than 30 seconds) allows a maximum of:

Summary of PAHs 10 mg/kg
B¦ÁP 1 mg/kg

¡¡

2 PAHs substances are:

1. Naphthalene 9. Benzo(a)anthracene
2. Acenaphthylene 10. Chrysene
3. Acenaphthene 11. Benzo(b)fluoranthene
4. Fluorene 12. Benzo(k)fluoranthene
5. Phenanthrene 13. Benzo(a)pyrene (B¦ÁP)
6. Anthracene 14. Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene
7. Fluoranthene 15. Dibenzo(a,h)anthracene
8. Pyrene 16. Benzo(g,hi)perylene
